Initial Consultation

This is the first step for all new clients.

You will meet the trainer in-person or virtually (your choice) for 1 hour. We will review your dog’s medical and behavior history, your lifestyle, you and your dog’s learning styles, and establish clear goals and expectations. By the end of the hour you will know the next steps to proceed with training. This is a chance for you to get a feel for my training style and make sure we are a good fit for each other. I’ll likely give you a few tasks to work on before we begin officially training together.

In-Person: $165  •  Virtual: $150

Connie Ko, owner of Kuma Dog Training in Mountain View, California, is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer, Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA) specializing in puppy socialization, basic manners training, and confidence-building for shy and fearful dogs.

Hi! I'm Connie.

My approach to dog training is built around fostering empathy for our dogs’ needs and curiosity about what they’re feeling. Our canine companions can’t speak English, but they are constantly trying to communicate with us! That is the magic of dogs ✨ Learning to read your dog’s body language will open the door to a whole world of information!

The vast challenges of dog ownership in today’s urban society can feel overwhelming at times. How do you cultivate your dogs’ dogginess without sacrificing your own happiness and enjoyment of the life you share with them? How can you help your dog feel safe and thrive in an environment that their ancestors weren’t bred for? The answers to these questions can look very different depending on each human/dog team, but all of them require equal parts of training, love, kindness (for your dog and for yourself), and commitment. The good news is that, if you’re here, you’ve already got the love, kindness, and commitment pieces down! Let me help you with the training piece.

Using science-based methods and fun, relationship-enhancing games, my goal is to help you and your dog develop your own unique communication style. Without the use of intimidation or force, you’ll learn how to empower your dog to make the right choices, and teach them what you’d prefer them to do instead of engaging in a problem behavior. Together, we’ll discover the best version of your furry friend ♥️

Aside from Kuma Dog Training, I’m also an instructor at Sirius Dog Training (Palo Alto).

Who's Kuma?

My first dog, Kuma, sparked my lifelong fascination with animal behavior. He was a loving family member but, outside of our home, he barked and lunged at strangers as well as other dogs. My family consulted with several trainers; all of them taught us to deliver painful corrections in response to his behavior. None of the techniques they taught us worked. In fact, Kuma got worse.

We finally gave up trying to resolve his reactivity after the last trainer we worked with used an electric shock collar on him. My heart still aches when I think of the fear and confusion in his eyes when the trainer delivered the shock.

I wish I could have used the knowledge I have now to help him. His memory fuels my dedication to developing a compassionate, force-free approach to rehabilitating fearful dogs and empowering owners of reactive dogs to confidently navigate the world with their beloved canine companions.

“My recently adopted dog Rufus came to us and had major fear of strangers (men in particular) that showed itself in the form of aggression… Rufus has come so far in the few sessions we have had with Connie. We are now able to go to the dog park and he happily runs up and greet strangers (even men!). Rufus is now showing the goofy, loveable side of him that we used to only see inside our house. Every time we go to the dog park others comment on how well behaved and happy Rufus is, and that is thanks to the hard work Connie put in with him! I highly, highly recommend Connie to anyone having the same issues with their dog!”

“We would 100% recommend Connie to anyone looking for a dog trainer! We worked with her on our dog’s leash reactivity. Connie is very knowledgeable and gave us tons of tools to work with our dog. She had thoughtful and insightful responses to our questions and adapted the training as needed to address different nuances that came up as we went through training… Connie was very professional and we really felt that she was invested in helping us succeed with this issue.”

– Kerri S.

“Connie Ko was the dream dog trainer for our newly adopted…one year old terrier mix [who] was abandoned and rescued by the Peninsula Humane Society… She was so perfect for this little guy. He was fearful and jumpy before she gently and firmly taught him so much. He’s now a confident, calm and loving companion. Connie has a magical touch and we have learned from her. She follows up all lessons with thoughtful and thorough email summaries. She is professional and personable. We recommend her to all dog owners.”

– Libby R. & Ron K.

“Connie changed the course of my puppy’s life with her expert training. I can’t recommend her enough. Turns out Hudson is a quick learn with the right tools. Specifically he was having challenges with leash walking but she taught us so much more. Working with him is now a joy and the benefits for both he and I [are] life changing.”

– Kelli P.

Connie is an amazing dog trainer! … My dog, Pepe, is a smart and super friendly mutt on his terms, but has reactivity issues with some dogs and aggressiveness towards people who try to get him to do something he disagrees with… She developed a very positive connection with him and we were able to progress by altering his reactions every single session. Connie is practical, pleasantly direct and calmly confident in working with dogs and people.
